Obwohl es schon eine Ewigkeit her zu sein scheint, muss ich noch einmal auf meine Japan-Reise im Oktober letzten Jahres zurückkommen. Wie ich bereits erwähnt hatte, haben mein Freund und ich zwei Reisen innerhalb Japans unternommen. Die erste führte uns nach Beppu, worüber ich bereits in mehreren Posts berichtet habe. (Den Anfang der Beppu-Reihe findet ihr hier.)
Nun geht es – passend zum herrlich warmen Wetter der letzten Tage 🙂 – zu unserem zweiten Ziel: Ishigaki, einer Insel der Yaeyama-Inselgruppe in der Präfektur Okinawa.

Die Inseln der Präfektur Okinawa, ebenso wie die der Präfektur Kagoshima, werden auch als Ryūkyū-Inseln bezeichnet. Um das Jahr 1400 gehörten sie zum Königreich Ryūkyū, welches von Japan unabhängig war. Später wurden sie in den japanischen Staat integriert. Daher gibt es auf den Ryūkyū-Inseln sehr viel eigene Kultur zu entdecken, die auch von China und Taiwan beeinflusst wurde.
Ishigaki (im Japanischen Ishigaki-jima, also Ishigaki-Insel) liegt viel näher an Taiwan, als an Japans Hauptinsel. Zum Vergleich: Bis nach Tōkyō sind es ca. 1.946 Km Luftlinie, nach Taipeh in Taiwan nur etwa 275 Km!

Während das Klima auf Japans Hauptinsel gemäßigt und im Norden in Hokkaidō sogar sehr kalt ist, liegen die Okinawa-Inseln in den Subtropen. Das bedeutet lange Sandstrände, Korallenriffe, tropische Pflanzen und Tiere! Es ist ein ganz anderes Japan als auf der Hauptinsel – und vermutlich gerade durch diese Exotik ein sehr geschätztes Reiseziel für die meisten Japaner. Leider ist es oft auch sehr teuer, aber wie ich bereits in Billig nach Okinawa? erläutert habe, können die Preise innerhalb eines Jahres schon sehr unterschiedlich sein. Es lohnt sich daher ein Preisvergleich und das Warten auf den richtigen Moment. 😉

Ishigaki ist ein gutes Reiseziel für Naturliebhaber, die Flora und Fauna erkunden wollen. Es gibt wunderschöne Badestrände, Tauch- und Schnorchelgelegenheiten, Aussichtspunkte und leckeres Essen.

In den folgenden Beiträgen werde ich versuchen, unsere Urlaubserlebnisse thematisch gegliedert wiederzugeben. Eigentlich möchte ich mich kurz fassen, aber schon diese Einleitung, die ursprünglich nicht geplant war, zeigt mir, dass es mal wieder eine Herausforderung für mich sein wird…

Ishigaki: Japan’s tropical island in Okinawa – an overview

Although it seems to be ages ago, I would like to revert to my journey to Japan in last year October. As I mentioned before, my boyfriend and I undertook two journeys within Japan. The first one let us to Beppu – I wrote about it in several posts. (You can find the start of the Beppu series here.)
Now – fitting the awesome warm weather of the last days 🙂 – we’re heading on to our second destination: Ishigaki, an island of the Yaeyama island group in the Okinawa prefecture.

The islands of the Okinawa prefecture as well as of the Kagoshima prefecture are also named Ryūkyū islands. Around the year 1400 they were part of the Ryūkyū Kingdrom, which was independent from Japan. Later they were integrated into the Japanese state. That’s why there is a lot independent culture to explore on the Ryūkyū islands, that is also influenced by China and Taiwan.
Ishigaki (Ishigaki-jima in Japanese, that means Ishigaki-island) is located much closer to Taiwan than to Japan’s main island. For comparison: Until Tōkyō it is around 1.946 Km linear distance, until Taipei in Taiwan only around 275 Km!

While the climate on Japan’s main island is moderate and in Hokkaidō in the North even very cold, the Okinawa islands are located in the subtropics. That means long sand beaches, coral reefs, tropical plants and animals! It is a totally different Japan than on the main island – and probably due to this exotical atmosphere a very cherished destination for most Japanese. Unfortunately it is often also very expensive, but as I already outlined in Going to Okinawa for a cheap price?, the prices within a year can be quite different. Because of this, it is worth to compare prices and wait for the right moment. 😉

Ishigaki is a good destination for nature lovers who like to explore flora and fauna. There are wonderful bathing beaches, opportunities for diving and snorkeling, viewpoints and delicious food.

In the following posts I will try to reflect our journey experiences in a thematical structured way. Actually I try to make it short, but even this introduction, which was not planned in the first place, makes me realize, that this will be again a challenge for me…
